There are 12 children in our preschool and pre-k programs. The nursery and preschool children (30 months to 3 years) and preschool II and pre-k children (3.5 to 5 years) receive daily instruction both indoors and outdoors. Our school is inspired by the Montessori and Reggio Emilia models of learning. Both of these approaches, include the importance of presenting tactile and experience-based learning activties, hearing the child’s voice and ideas, incorporating elements of nature, as well as creating calm, inviting spaces for children to learn. Our children develop curiosity and respect for nature. For every hour of indoor time the children spend at least 15 minutes outdoors, regardless of the weather. Only thunderstorms keep us inside!
Structured instructional methods include:
- Practical life skills and independence using the Montessori model and special equipment
- Math, Science, and Social Studies concepts with Montessori equipment
- Handwriting without Tears Program for strengthening fine motor skills
- Early literacy with Zoo Phonics and the Scholastic BOB Book Series
Emergent and child-led instructional methods include:
- exploring uneven terrain within the designated boundaries
- building with loose parts (‘tree cookies’ and sticks)
- planting flowers and vegetables
- playing in the mud kitchen
- collecting rocks and other unique finds in nature
- searching for salamanders and worms (to observe)
- building obstacle courses
- water play.
- The play possibilities are endless!
